Union spokeswoman says guard had complained about working in prison's chapel alone.
A female guard killed by an inmate at Monroe Correctional Complex Saturday night has been identified as 34-year-old Officer Jayme Biendl.
Teamsters 117 spokeswoman Tracey Thompson said she was told that Biendl had been strangled in the prison chapel.
Prison officials first became aware of something wrong shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday when a male inmate was discovered missing during a routine check, according to a Department of Corrections statement. A few minutes later, the inmate was found in the chapel lobby and told officers that he had planned to escape.
An hour later, staff members realized that a correctional officer's keys and radio were missing and Biendl was found unresponsive in the chapel, the DOC statement said.
The inmate suspected of killing Biendl was serving a life without parole sentence, Thompson said.
Monroe Police are investigating the case.
Biendl was an eight-year veteran at the prison. Thompson said Biendl had complained to her union shop steward and prison supervisors about being the sole guard working in the chapel and feeling unsafe.
Gov. Chris Gregoire issued a statement Sunday on Biendl's death, saying, "I am truly saddened by her senseless murder. This young woman was devoted to an agency that works around the clock to ensure our communities are safe, which makes her death all the more tragic. I ask all Washingtonians to join me in keeping her loved ones in our thoughts and prayers."
Gregoire said she has asked Department of Corrections Secretary Eldon Vail for a thorough review of the incident as well as to look at the safeguards in place at the prison.
Biendl was a former Officer of the Year and the impact of her death on the people who knew her is evident.
"We are all shocked, saddened, and angered by this terrible tragedy," read a statement on the Teamsters Local 117 website Sunday morning. 1:36 p.m. PST, January 30, 2011

If the teaser trailer for "Soul Surfer" grabbed your interest a few weeks ago, just wait until you see the full-length trailer, which hit the web today! Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we got a longer look at the amazing true tale of Bethany Hamilton brought to life on the big screen.
For those not familiar with the story, Bethany, a young surfer, endures a horrific shark attack accident and must have her left arm amputated. Still, after finding the will to move on, a defiant Bethany returns to the ocean and begins surfing again. Not choked up yet? Well, the trailer, with its inspirational subject matter and its fitting use of Katy Perry's "Firework," should definitely do the trick.
The trailer starts out like so many surfer flicks that came before it; sunny, exotic and with some awe-inspiring shots of killer waves. We meet Bethany, a bikini-clad teen (played by AnnaSophia Robb), on the cusp of becoming a pro surfer, who splits her time between hanging with friends and hanging ten.
But things take a tragic turn, when one day out in the water, Bethany is attacked by a shark. After being rushed to the hospital with her parents (played by Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid) by her side, they receive the devastating news that Bethany will lose her entire arm.
After struggling with the initial shock, Bethany, with the support of those around her (including Carrie Underwood, making her big screen debut, as a church youth group leader), she's determined to get back on her board.
It's an amazing story, but it's the cast that really sells it for us. In the trailer, AnnaSophia Robb proves she's got major acting, and surfing, skills. Moreover, she has the task of not only playing a real-life person whose entire life is altered in a single moment, but one with an undoubtedly difficult obstacle to overcome.
Carrie, who was super in her guest spot on "How I Met Your Mother" last year, seems to be making a pretty smooth transition into film. We were especially impressed by the moment in the preview when her character tearfully tells a struggling Bethany, "I don't know why terrible things happen to us sometimes, but I have to believe something good is going to come out of this."
Equally as impressive as the cast are the special effects in the movie, as Bethany's amputated left limb looks very much real. Moreover, with a PG rating it's unlikely the film will show much, if any, of the shark attack or amputation. So, for those with queasy stomachs, this should be an easier surviving-against-all-odds movie to sit through than James Franco's tough, but undeniably amazing, Oscar-nominated "127 Hours."
What did you think of the full "Soul Surfer" trailer? Were you inspired, too? Let us know in the comments below.
AnnaSophia Robb rides the waves in this brand-new still from the upcoming Soul Surfer.
The 17-year-old actress plays Bethany Hamilton in the film, about a young, teenage surfer girl (Robb) who summons the courage to go back into the ocean after losing an arm in a shark attack. The flick is based on the real life of Bethany.
AnnaSophia posted on her official Facebook page about the film, “Saw Soul Surfer! It was great seeing the film put together. I really really hope you all like it. My favorite part is all the surf footage. The camera guys got sick footage and Bethany has the best barrel of her life in the film.”
Soul Surfer hits theaters on April 8th!

Playboy accepts founder Hugh Hefner's sweetened offer to take the company private
NEW YORK (AP) -- The publisher of Playboy magazine has agreed to accept a sweetened buyout offer from a partnership headed by founder Hugh Hefner, allowing the original playboy to fulfill his plans to take the company private.
Hefner is Playboy's largest shareholder with about 70 percent of Playboy Enterprises Inc.'s voting shares and 28 percent of the nonvoting stock. By leading a buyout for a larger portion, the 84-year-old known for his penchant for silk pajamas and young blond women is betting that the racy magazine he launched in 1953 can still reap profits in the digital age.
It's been a challenge. The printed Playboy has struggled with rivals from the Web and has lost both readers and advertisers. In November, the company reported a wider third quarter loss than a year ago as its revenue fell 7 percent to $52.1 million.
To stem its losses, Playboy's management has been trying to transform the company from a publishing and TV business into a "brand management" company, leaning more on revenue from licensing out the Playboy name and bunny ears for a range of products, such as lingerie, handbags and sunglasses.
"I believe this agreement will give us the resources and flexibility to return Playboy to its unique position and to further expand our business around the world," said Hefner, who serves as the magazine's editor-in-chief and chief creative officer, in a statement. Playboy declined a request to interview Hefner.
Hefner-controlled Icon Acquisition Holdings LP is offering $6.15 a share for Playboy, an 18 percent premium over Friday's closing price. Shares rose 89 cents, or 17 percent, to close at $6.09 on Monday. The stock has traded in the 52-week range of $3.04 and $6.10.
The accepted bid values the Chicago-based company at about $207 million and tops Hefner's offer of $5.50 per share in July, though it's just shy of an offer made by a group led by Penthouse magazine that's valued at $210 million.
As part of the deal completed Sunday night, Scott Flanders will remain Playboy CEO and keep what the company called a "significant" equity investment in Playboy, the company said. Icon Acquisitions is paying for the purchase with equity commitments from Rizvi Traverse, a private investment firm, and a debt commitment from Jefferies & Co.
In an e-mail message, Flanders said the deal has several benefits.
"One, we are a small company and a partnership with Rizvi Traverse does for our capital and management structure what AMI and IMG did for our operations," he wrote, referring to Playboy's decision in 2009 to outsource the magazine's business functions, except editorial, to American Media Inc., and its deal with IMG Worldwide Inc. to oversee licensing in Asia and Europe.
It will also eliminate the costs of being a public company and allow Playboy to "take a long-term view and focus on what is best for our businesses and not on the near-term earnings demands of our public shareholders," he added.
Playboy said Monday that a group of board members had been evaluating Hefner's offer and decided to recommend the deal to stockholders Sunday night. A tender offer is expected to begin by Jan. 21 and the deal is expected to close by the end of the first quarter.
Hefner now faces the big task turning the company around. Playboy's most popular years are well behind it -- the magazine enjoyed its heyday in the 1970s. Today it faces competition that ranges from other men's magazines such as Maxim to far racier content available on the Web for free. In recent years, the company has found it difficult to lure readers and advertisers as the Internet supplants print as the top purveyor of adult content. Falling revenue has forced several rounds of layoffs at the company since 2008.
Not surprisingly, it wasn't the paper magazine but Playboy's digital prospects -- on the Web and on mobile devices -- that had been of interest to Marc Bell, the CEO of Penthouse owner FriendFinder, who said in July the business "needs to be run like a 21st century company."
Representatives FriendFinder did not return a message for comment Monday.
