NBC Orders Series about 1960`s Playboy Bunnies

NBC is keen on a Mad Men style drama called Playboy, an hour-long drama set in the frisky world of 1960s Playboy clubs. Chad Hodge wrote the script, which focuses on a group of women working as Playboy bunnies in the Chicago club. Playboy will use that as a jumping-off point to explore the nation’s changing mores and the coming sexual revolution. NBC had a period drama that was very successful early on, called American Dreams, so it’s not a surprise that they are going try that realm again, but also with the success of Mad Men, this seems like a good pick up.

Other networks are toying in the era as well trying to compete with the sex, style and aura of Mad Men as well, so don’t think that NBC is alone. Starz recently gave a 10-episode order to Magic City, set in a fictional Miami Beach hotel in the late 1950s, when the Rat Pack played and Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, while ABC is developing Pan Am, centering on the airline’s wild crew in the 1960s.

I have to say that all these shows get me excited for one reason or another, but this series has the best appeal. I mean, Playboy bunnies. C’mon, what guy wouldn’t be excited about that? ABC’s series, not so much, but the Starz series is intriguing. We shall see.

You excited about the 60s hitting us in new ways in primetime?

I know, typical male, writing a story about Playboy right? At least we are consistent. BTW, sidebar, this isn’t meant to sound disrespectful but women just look good naked, its why Playboy has been successful for years. We reported a few months ago that NBC wants to cash in on some Mad Men success, period success by putting out a series that takes place in the 60s around the famous Playboy clubs. Now the show may have its first star in sexy broad, Amber Heard.

Deadline reports that Heard is in talks for a lead role on the NBC drama pilot Playboy. The project, from 20th TV/Imagine TV, is set at the Playboy Club in Chicago in 1963. Heard would play a new hire at the club, originally an orphan from Fort Wayne, an inquisitive young woman with an untethered sexuality and a dark past. Alan Taylor, who directed the pilot for…wait for it… AMC’s Mad Men, is going to shockingly direct Playboy from a script by Chad Hodge.

Yes I hope one day that Heard poses nude in Playboy as well, what 25 year old man would I be not to want that? Exactly. I condone this casting and can’t wait for the show, not just for the sex appeal but the period and the concept is extremely interesting to me.

Deadline reports that Laura Benanti will take the lead role in NBC’s drama pilot Playboy. The series is set at the Playboy Club in Chicago in 1963. Benanti will play Carol-Lynne, a 30-year-old bombshell and an established star at the Playboy Club who knows that her days as a Bunny are numbered. Benanti, who won a Tony for Gypsy, co-starred on ABC’s Eli Stone and FX’s Starved.

She would join the already in talks Amber Heard as would play a new hire at the club, originally an orphan from Fort Wayne, an inquisitive young woman with an untethered sexuality and a dark past. Alan Taylor, who directed the pilot for…wait for it… AMC’s Mad Men, is going to shockingly direct Playboy from a script by Chad Hodge.
