Hugh Hefner Is Engaged!

It appears that Hugh Hefner and girlfriend Crystal Harris--who's 60 years his junior!--are taking their relationship to the next step, and are engaged: The Playboy kingpin Tweeted Christmas Eve that he gave Harris a ring.

The 84-year-old Playboy CEO tweeted, "After the movie [The Tourist] tonight, Crystal & I exchanged gifts. I gave Crystal a ring. A truly memorable Christmas Eve." So it seems Hefner and his 24-year-old "Number One" girlfriend are chapel-bound!

Hef has been married twice before: To Mildred Williams from 1949-1959 and Kimberly Conrad from 1989-2010.

WASHINGTON Dec 26 (Reuters) - Hugh Hefner, the twice-married founder of Playboy, is taking the plunge again.

Hefner, 84, said on Saturday in a posting on Twitter that he and his girlfriend Crystal Harris, 24, got engaged on Friday.

"When I gave Crystal the ring, she burst into tears. This is the happiest Christmas weekend in memory," Hefner tweeted.

Hefner, whose magazine was founded in 1953, was divorced from his second wife, Kimberley Conrad, earlier this year. His first marriage to Mildred Williams ended in divorce in 1959.

Harris was the Playboy Playmate of the Month for December 2009.

Hefner, known around the world by his nickname, Hef, has championed sexual freedom and civil rights, published stories challenging McCarthyism and the Vietnam War, and backed gay causes and the legalisation of marijuana.

With a cover featuring a calendar photo of Marilyn Monroe, Hefner put the first issue together on the kitchen table in his flat. It hit the stands in December 1953 and sold 51,000 copies -- enough to finance a second issue -- and led to a multimillion dollar international corporation.

Washington Whispers Reagan 'Threesome' Reference on E! Draws Protests

A new E! reality show featuring wives of rock stars is under fire from associates of Ronald Reagan after two characters who say they are haunted by his ghost fanaticized about having sex with the former president.

"If this skit was funny and Reagan were alive, he would have laughed at it. Trouble is, it is not funny, it's not creative and will be ignored by the decent majority of this country," Reagan biographer Craig Shirley tells Whispers. "The sickness and depravity which afflicts our culture has as its base camp Hollywood and that cesspool of a town makes Sodom and Gomorrah look like Bethlehem," he adds.

The raunchy episode of Married to Rock featured former Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens and his wife Josie, who claim to live in an apartment of the former president's, talking about being followed by the ghost of the Gipper.

In the most recent episode, Josie suggests Reagan's ghost has joined her in the bathroom. "How cool would it be if it's the ghost of Ronald Reagan!" she says. Steve agrees. "Any president is welcome in my home. The idea of Ronald Reagan, myself, and my wife having a threesome is so damn kinky, come on, I'm in."

At another point, Josie Stevens tells other rocker wives how she will lure the ghost with jelly beans and her breasts.

Joining in protesting the show is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library. Executive Director John Heubusch tells Whispers that the show tried to take advantage of its link to Reagan. "The show made a request several weeks ago to film a piece of an episode here at the Reagan Library promising a respectful approach," says Heubusch. "We turned them down. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it was a really bad idea."

And Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center, a conservative media watchdog, says, "This is beyond stupid, even by E!'s standards. This, we remind ourselves, is a 'reality' show. There is simply nothing more unrealistic and idiotic than this scenario. What an embarrassment for everyone concerned, except when you have no shame, you can't be embarrassed."

E! had no immediate comment. The episode was promoted on AOL's TV Squad

Are poinsettias poisonous?

Poinsettia (Photo: Scott Bauer / USDA / Wikipedia)

By Melissa Breyer
More from Care2 Green Living blog
Pity the poor poinsettia. All it ever wanted was to be a nice emblem for the holidays: To be patiently wrapped in red foil and hoisted on hostesses, to festoon festive Christmas sweaters, and to be eternally mimicked in plastic. But somewhere along the way it picked up a bad-girl reputation as a lethal beauty -- lovely to look at and terribly toxic if tasted!

But are the rumors true? Are pretty poinsettias potentially poisonous? About 70 percent of the population will answer yes, and although every year there is a bumper crop of stories explaining otherwise -- the myth persists. And myth it is. Poinsettia's are not poisonous, merely the victim of a popularly enduring urban legend.

It all started back in the early part of the 20th century when the young child of a U.S. Army officer was alleged to have died from consuming a poinsettia leaf -- a story which was later retracted.

But, as these things have a habit of doing, the toxic potential of the poinsettia took on a life of its own. Now many people treat poinsettias as persona non grata (or poinsettia non grata, as the case may be) in their households.

According to the American Medical Association's Handbook of Poisonous and Injurious Plants, other than occasional cases of vomiting, ingestion of the poinsettia plant has been found to produce no ill effect. And other experts have weighed in as well.

The Society of American Florists worked with the academic faculty of entomology at Ohio State University to thoroughly test all parts of the poinsettia and conclusively established that there were no adverse effects. In 1975, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission denied a petition to require warning labels for poinsettia plants.

As for your pets, the American Veterinary Medicine Association of America does not include poinsettias on its list of plants that are a threat to animals. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states that ingestion of poinsettias may cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal tract irritation, which may include drooling, vomiting, and/or diarrhea -- but nothing severe or fatal.

Mistletoe (Photo: iStockPhoto)

Mistletoe (Photo: iStockPhoto)

Mistletoe, on the other hand? Not so innocent. Along with inspiring smooching if stood underneath, mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal distress, a slowed heartbeat, and other reactions if ingested, due to the presence of harmful chemicals like viscotoxins. Although not thought to be fatal, it can cause severe reactions.

In pets, mistletoe may cause gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular collapse, dyspnea, bradycardia, erratic behavior, vomiting, diarrhea, and low blood pressure. Yikes!

So keep the mistletoe securely fastened above your door, but fear the poinsettia no more.

Give it Away for Nina

Nina Hartley is seeking funds to cover her recovery from surgery. Please show @ninaland your support here: http://www.giveforward.com/giveitawayfornina

Nina's been sharing her love with you for years. Let's show her how much we appreciate it, and her. Please give what you can. Thanks!

Help Our Friend Nina

If you’re reading this you’re likely already a friend, or fan, of Nina’s. Thanks for taking the time to be here. She’s always made an effort to connect on the personal level with all she meets, and it’s from that personal level that I write this. If you’ve ever had a moment’s fun with any of her work there’s something real, concrete and life saving you can do for her and it won’t take much.

She is seeking funds to cover her recovery from surgery, tentatively scheduled for late January/early February 2011. Recovery will take 2-4 weeks, depending on how it goes.

As some of you already know she has fibroid tumors in her uterus. They’re genetic and are not cancer, nor will they turn into cancer, so that’s a blessing right there. However they are unsightly and are starting to cause other, negative side effects. After dealing with them for nearly twenty years the time has come for a permanent solution. She thought that nearing menopause would cause them to shrink but they show no signs of doing so. So, surgery is the next step. She’s lucky enough to have medical insurance to cover the cost of the operation. What she needs is money to cover her expenses during recovery. In twenty-six years she’s never needed help more. As an example of how easy it could be, if each of her Twitter followers donated just five dollars that would cover everything.

Some may ask, “What about Ernest?” Her darling husband is facing his own medical crises, as well as a cut back at work. He won’t be able to help her financially, though he’d very much like to do so. He’ll be there to take care of her when she comes home from the hospital. Anything we raise here will be a big help to both of them at this difficult time.

She’s never asked for help before, and it’s hard for her to do so now, which is why I’m doing this, but this counts as an emergency. She’s been hit by the recession as badly as the next person and her reserves won’t cover what she’ll need. Her family is not in a position to help, though they would if they could. That leaves, in the words of Tennessee Williams, “the kindness of strangers.” “Strangers” being you. Of course, Nina doesn’t think of her fans as strangers, only friends she’s not yet met in person, so I like to think I’m asking her friends for help.

After all she has given me, taught me, been there for me, it is my pleasure to give back to her. If she has ever taught you anything, been there for you when nobody else understood, or just made you happy with her sweet, wonderful demeanor, please donate at least five bucks. You can help her continue to give from the depth of her being to make you happy.

Please, let’s all show her how much we love her…

Lesley

Petition to the USPS for a Gypsy Rose Lee Centennial Stamp

<<--- Click Photo to Sign Petition <<---

In anticipation of her impending 100th birthday--and in celebration of her unique and lasting impact on our culture--we are gathering signatures in support of a United States postage stamp commemorating the First Lady of American Burlesque, Gypsy Rose Lee.

Born Rose Louise Hovick in Seattle, Washington in 1911, Ms. Lee was a legendary stage and screen entertainer, whose 1957 memoir inspired the Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents musical, Gypsy: A Musical Fable. Adapted for the screen in 1962 (with Natalie Wood in the title role), Gypsy is widely considered one of the crowning achievements of mid-20th century musical theatre; remaining as relevant--and popular--today as when it first debuted in 1959.

But there was much more to Gypsy, the woman, than Gypsy: the Fable. While her legacy as America's most celebrated stripteaser endures, Ms. Lee's other accomplishments--as an author, playwright, political activist, popular talk show host, fashion icon, and a devoted single mother--are equally noteworthy. A proud patriot, she entertained troops during the Korean and Vietnam wars and was adored by factory workers, homemakers, the military, New York's literary elite, gangsters, Eleanor Roosevelt, and everyone in between.

In honor of Ms. Lee's centennial, we humbly request a tribute worthy of such a beloved (and enduring) American icon: a United States postage stamp in her honor.

Burlesque- the movie or the art form?

(Postings From: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/missexoticworld )

I finally broke down and responded to questions about the movie they happened to call "Burlesque." I know, I know. Another one? I can only offer that it is not a review, just a response to some of the press:

"I will not join the chorus of my burlesque brethren reviewing the film because I have not seen it. I have read and heard enough reviews to know that I'm not interested in paying for what will likely be a disappointing experience. (Maybe I'll rent it some drunken night next year.) I'm not livid that it's out there, I just don't think I'd enjoy the film, regardless of its title. It has also been made clear that it does not reflect burlesque as our community knows/practices/ cherishes it. I do recognize the opportunity that this film's publicity presents for us to get new audiences in to see what we do, even if they were expecting something quite different. I support a very broad definition of burlesque and can live with the fact that mine has very little in common with Mr. Antin's.

However, I do take exception to this sniffing attitude of superiority to dirty strippers. Down & dirty strippers (and confrontational performance artists too) are every bit as much our forebears as cabaret and vaudeville artists. Burlesque is a working class art form. It historically employs low humor to skewer self-righteous so-called high culture. It lampoons politics and is a political art form itself, especially in our puritanical society. These are essential elements. It seems to me that his film does none of these things. Another critical element in burlesque is Self-Expression. That is very difficult to achieve when you're trotting out tired imitations of Fosse's brilliant work. Most artists feel strongly that you do not celebrate your heroes by merely imitating them but by learning from them and perhaps feeling their influence here and there in your own original work.

Attitudes like those attributed to Antin & Culpepper in the press suggest that they seek to "elevate" burlesque. (From The Advocate: "The two shared a vision of burlesque — musical parody with sexual innuendo, as it originated in Europe in the 1800s, before it got muddled together with stripping.") These people who strive to make burlesque highbrow are working to kill it. When burlesque becomes elitist and ceases to connect with real people, it ceases to be burlesque. By all means, we should be intelligent and subtle and witty in our work, but we have to achieve the high/low balancing act. We need to deliver thoughtful content and practiced artistry while Entertaining the people in the cheap seats.

Similarly, opera used to be for everyone and was lively and exciting. Opera stars used to be rock stars. Once upon a time, ordinary working class people could afford to see it and even had fun at the opera. As far as most ordinary people today are concerned, opera is as good as dead. I do not want to see that happen to burlesque."

xxx Tigger!

I agree with Tigger wholeheartedly. I also have to say that a large amount of the "dirty strippers" would LOVE to be entertaining in a more artistic manner, but it may be difficult paying the bills being an artist for a living, there is not much inspiration nor many mentors in that environment to bring them out , and the clubs hardly encourage performance in most places.Or at least they didn't the last years I danced.I headlined at The Body Shop for about 5 years when it was a Burlesque club(in L.A) as did several of the lovely ladies in this forum.Even more worked there as non headliners, with equally stunning and riveting artistic portrayals of the art as "we" know it.I was the last headliner there before it was gutted and remade into a nudie bar.I danced for another 5 years or so after we all got unceremoniously dumped out the back door after pay day one night by the new owners after Jamal died"We're closing to become a nude bar, whatever you don't
take tonight will be thrown out"It was awful trying to pack years of props and whatnot in an hour after a full nights work while stunned.Except for Jumbo's(which I loved)every club I went to after that, the only way you could make enough to survive was to "hustle the floor" for those lapdances.I still did my best to do shows, but as one dancer put it I was usually "casting my stripper pearls before swine".I worked in Atlanta a couple years (I won best overall performance" in Miss Nude Atlanta one year, it didn't change anything in my life except an extra few tips during the contest)and a couple in Houston and then one here in Las Vegas I never gave up trying to do shows, but ultimately it was just too expensive, time consuming and the men didn't come to see that .What with the high availability of internet porn free and at anyone's disposal without even putting on clothes,"a little titillation" with some art won't pay the bills, much less pay for the
costumes. While I was grateful I already had beautiful costumes,.even the upkeep was expensive after a while..I guess my long drawn out point is, that dirty strippers might be that way because that's what pays the bills. Not across the board, and I certainly don't know the numbers as to how many would prefer to be more creative and less nasty,I also agree with all his other points as well, he writes very well.Better than me,lol I'd expand on some of them but I've babbled a bit already here..I haven't seen the movie yet, I've heard it called "Showgirls 2" around here too, lol.One final note, I've noticed there's "amateur troops" sprouting up on Craig's list. I tried to get in one one, but the amateur who has never done it besides in her living room thinks "anyone who is not an amateur will be a diva and suck the fun out of everything". I have had several spinal surgeries over the last few years and am all healed up now and would like to get back into
performing.I would LOVE to be part of a group, I have no desire to be a Diva(lol) I just want to be part of the magic i once knew and be part of
bringing it back if I can.Now that I would be doing it more for the love of the art than to survive,I think I could bring a lot of energy , love, humor, experience, and of course talent to an existing group, or if there are other performers in Las Vegas that would like to make a troupe, or if anyone has any information on how I at least can get into performing again solo here, I would REALLY appreciate any information or help.I wish we had burlesque 411 here.I don't get a chance to read the forum every day, I may have missed a post about groups here.I REALLY want to be performing again, but purely entertainment. Not lap-dancing. .I might break a hip..I attached the promo ticket of me from back in the day for a little trip down Body Shop memory lane if anyone would like to see it.I love this forum and I thank you for taking the time to read my post!I apologize for my crappy grammar or any mistakes.I hope everyone's holiday is a bright one!..Katz.
